High Income charge: restart your Child Benefit payments

If you are entitled to receive Child Benefit and have previously stopped your payments because you or your partner were liable to the High Income Child Benefit charge, you can ask to start your payments again. You can use an online form to make your request.

Who can use this online form

You can only use the online form if all of the following apply:

  • you have previously stopped your Child Benefit payments because you or your partner were liable for the High Income Child Benefit charge
  • you are the person entitled to receive Child Benefit

You can also use this form if you're an 'appointee'. An appointee can act on behalf of someone who is ill or disabled and can't manage their own affairs.

If you want to restart your Child Benefit payments because of a change in you or your child's circumstances, you'll also need to report the change to the Child Benefit Office.

Authorised agents will soon be able to restart Child Benefit payments on behalf of their clients.

Information you need before you start

You won't be able to save any information that you type into the online form, so have the following handy:

  • your email address
  • your full postal address including postcode
  • your date of birth
  • your National Insurance number
  • your Child Benefit number
  • the full name and date of birth of any children you receive Child Benefit for
  • bank details for your Child Benefit payments, including account number and sort code

This is important as it helps the Child Benefit Office to confirm your identity. They have a duty of care to protect you and will not reply if they think that confidentiality may be breached.
